SIXTEEN

When Conner finally arrived in Carynburg, he went to the hotel that he had been directed to by the woman who'd called him. He wanted to go straight to the hospital, but it was late at night and he was tired. He texted the woman anyway to let her know he'd made it in town safe. Immediately he received a text back telling him to meet her in the lobby of the hotel.

Conner was curious as to who it was. He assumed it was the lawyer of his parent's estate but a lawyer would surely want to meet in the morning. Since he had no idea, he was quite keen to meet her and see.

When he got inside, he saw a woman sitting in one of the chairs. She was the only person there, so he assumed it was the woman he was supposed to meet. He approached, and then paused. She looked familiar. He was quite sure he'd never met her before, but something about her...

"You're thinking that we look alike," the woman said, standing when she saw him. He realized it was true. They had the same dirty blonde hair and blue eyes. She even had his smile, with unnaturally white, straight teeth. He'd never needed braces and he doubted this woman had either.

"A little," he said. "Why is that? Who are you?"

The woman held out a hand. "My name is Morgan Wright," she said, "though I've recently found out that my name should have been Morgan Kingsley. I'm your sister, Conner. You have no idea how long I've wanted to meet you."

Conner stared at her. She was clearly crazy. He would have known if he had a sister. He'd always wanted siblings growing up -- he hated being an only child. If he had a sister, his parents' focus might have been on her instead of him. He shook her hand anyway because it was polite, and then she gestured at the chairs. He sank gratefully into one of them.

"I'm sorry," he said. "You'll have to forgive me. I've been driving for almost twelve hours. Did you say you're my sister?"

"Yes," Morgan said. "Now, I know what you're thinking. You can't have a sister. You'd know. Well, you wouldn't, because I was adopted out. About two years before you were born."

"No," Conner said. "My parents wouldn't have..."

"Well, they did," Morgan said. "I've talked to them. I searched for a long time to find them, and when I did, I wanted answers. They weren't ready for children. It was a little staggering for me to realize that I had a brother that was only two years younger than me. I mean, if they weren't ready when I was born, why were they ready for you?"

"I don't know," Conner said. His mind seemed to have stopped working. She must have been some kind of charlatan, but... those eyes. That hair. They could have been twins, if she was a boy. "You're really my sister."

"Yes," Morgan said. "I'd hug you, but that seems a little informal considering we just met.
